The University of Maine Cooperative Extension and the Maine Board of Pesticides Control will present four one-hour training sessions. Licensed pesticide applicators and dealers may attend sessions to earn credits towards recertification. One credit will be allowed for attendance at an entire hour of each topic covered. 1:00 FIBER MAINE-IA is a state-wide, year-long series of programs and events planned in celebration of the N’s designated International Year of Natural Fiber, 2009, and focusing on the place of fiber in Maine’s creative agricultural economy. In this 1-hour session, fiber producers, processors, and consumers are invited to learn about the workshops, lectures, demonstrations, and exhibits planned for the year. We will also share plans for revival of Maine’s participation in the national “Make It With Wool” contest, and for the October 2009 statewide conference that will offer new, fiber-centered perspectives on integrating agriculture, arts, culture, and economy in Maine.

Representatives from Austin Associates, the largest accounting firm specializing in farm accounting in Maine, will provide a one hour training on the basics of using QuickBooks for farm record keeping. This will be for beginning to moderate users. This workshop is being brought to you by the Heart of Maine Resource Conservation & Development (RC&D) who offers the NxLevel farm business planning course, “Tilling the Soil of Opportunity.” This 12-session course, underwritten by the Maine Department of Agriculture, is designed to help you test new ideas and look critically at all aspects of your farm enterprise, from management and labor to marketing and financials.

9:10 Systems & Approaches to Soil Fertility & Pest Suppression - Stellos Tavantzis, Robert Larken, Andrei Alyokhin, and Sue Erich, are part of a team of researchers and graduate students at the University of Maine and the USDA-ARS Lab in Orono studying how organic management including a rapeseed cover crop, compost, and biocontrol organisms afffect the soil, crop, and pest complex of farm systems.

The cost of farm inputs is being significantly impacted by the cost of energy. This year’s program is divided into two sessions; the first session dealing with an overview of the energy situation from a state, national and global perspective, while the second session is focused on what farmers can do to conserve and produce energy on-farm. The second session is being co-sponsored by the UMCEFarm Energy Team. The MESAS Annual Meeting of Members is scheduled to begin after the conclusion of the second session.
